In February 1945, 350 American POWs identified as Jewish or "undesirable" were separated from other prisoners at Stalag IX-B and sent to Berga an der Elster, a subcamp of Buchenwald. There they were forced to work in tunnels for V-2 rocket production under brutal conditions. Seventy-three died in the camp or on death marches. Their story remained largely unknown until the 1980s.
