Before D-Day, a team of Allied geologists and engineers conducted covert reconnaissance of Normandy beaches using midget submarines and frogmen. They collected sand samples to determine beach composition and gradient, crucial for designing landing craft that wouldn't get stuck. Their work, code-named Operation Husky, remained secret until the 1980s.
